01 / THE RIGHT SIZE

Pixels describe dimensions. KB measures storage.

An image has two different kinds of size. Its width and height count pixels: a 1200 by 800 photograph contains 960,000 picture elements. Its file size counts the bytes needed to store those elements in an encoded format. A 100 KB upload limit describes that stored file, not a particular rectangle. There is no universal width and height that always equals one hundred kilobytes.

Resizing normally means changing the pixel grid. Reducing a 2000 by 1500 picture to 1000 by 750 leaves one quarter as many pixels while keeping its proportions. That can reduce storage substantially, but the saved bytes also depend on how those pixels are encoded. Changing a print-resolution label such as DPI without changing the pixel grid does not reliably solve a file upload limit.

Why smaller dimensions may still exceed 100 KB

Imagine two photos with the same 800 by 600 dimensions. One shows a smooth wall; the other shows leaves, brickwork and detailed clothing. The detailed scene often needs more encoded data at a comparable quality setting. File format adds another difference: a photographic PNG can remain much larger than a JPEG of the same scene. Selecting a smaller width alone therefore cannot guarantee a particular number of kilobytes.

The receiving form may impose several conditions at once. A photo that is 90 KB could still fail because it is too narrow, has an unsupported extension, or uses the wrong aspect ratio. Likewise, a correctly sized square may exceed the allowed bytes. Read each requirement as a separate check. This page targets a maximum of 100,000 bytes, and it reports a failure if the chosen dimension limits prevent a suitable output.

How resizing and encoding work together

For JPEG and WebP output, the engine first tests encoding quality at the working dimensions. It measures the resulting file rather than predicting success from a width or a compression percentage. When a low-quality attempt is still too large, further quality searches at those dimensions would waste time. The engine moves to a smaller pixel grid and tests encoding again, looking for a useful result within the allowance.

Automatic reductions preserve the aspect ratio. The next scale is estimated from the measured file size, with a factor capped at 0.85. A step using 0.85 turns a 1000 by 800 image into approximately 850 by 680; a file far over budget can take a larger step. Minimum dimensions constrain that reduction, and rounding keeps pixel counts whole. This adaptive approach avoids repeatedly encoding an obviously oversized image.

Exact width and height change the workflow. The tool crops centrally to the requested aspect ratio and draws the requested rectangle before checking encoding quality. It then keeps those dimensions fixed rather than shrinking them below the requirement. Check that the central crop includes the entire subject. For flexible dimensions, proportional resizing keeps the picture's shape; it does not stretch a face to fill an unrelated rectangle.

Choose an output format the destination accepts. JPEG is a practical choice for opaque photos, while WebP can retain transparency. PNG encoding is lossless and does not respond to the JPEG quality slider in the same way, so fitting a complex PNG may require fewer pixels. Forcing a transparent image into JPEG gives it a white background. Inspect edges, lettering and fine patterns in the downloaded version before uploading it elsewhere.

What pixel dimensions make an image exactly 100 KB?

There is no fixed conversion. Detail, format and encoding quality change the byte count even when width and height are identical. The tool measures each encoded output against 100,000 bytes and may return a smaller valid file.

Will this resize the photo or just compress it?

It can do both. JPEG and WebP quality are tested first at the working dimensions. When that cannot meet the cap, flexible dimensions are reduced proportionally with an adaptive factor of 0.85 or less, subject to minimum dimensions and rounding. An exact-size setting keeps its specified rectangle.

Can I keep the width and height required by a form?

Yes. Use exact dimensions when both values must match. The tool applies a central crop to that shape and keeps the output dimensions fixed. If encoding cannot also meet the byte limit, it reports the conflict instead of silently producing smaller dimensions.

Why is my resized PNG still too large?

Fewer pixels do not guarantee a small PNG, especially for detailed photographs. PNG uses lossless encoding. Consider JPEG when transparency is unnecessary, or WebP when accepted; otherwise allow smaller dimensions if the destination permits them.

Can I make the file smaller without cropping?

With flexible dimensions, the automatic reduction preserves the original proportions rather than cropping to a new shape. Exact width and height can require a centered crop. Review those settings before processing a photo whose edges must remain visible.
